2024 Pre-Examination Procedures For WASSCE and BECE
West African Examinations Council (WAEC) revealed the Pre-Examination procedures and activities for the 2024 WASSCE and BECE.
In a Facebook post sighted by ghanaeducation.org, WAEC revealed the procedures or steps it follows before examination questions are set.
According to WAEC, before it sets questions for the WASSCE or BECE, the GES teaching syllabus and the WAEC Examinations syllabus must be developed. After this, WAEC will need to train knowledgeable and professionals who will be setting the questions.
Below are the procedures(STEP 1)
- Development of Teaching syllabus by the Ghana Education Service and Examinations syllabus by WAEC.
- Training of Item Writers
- Commissioning of ltem Writers/knowledgeable persons/experts/professionals in the subject areas are commissioned to set questions).
STEP 2
1. Trial testing of Items
2. Moderation of Items by experts
3. Compilation of papers by Subject Officers
4. Type setting, proof reading and editing
5. Printing of question papers
6. Accreditation /Recognition of Schools

STEP 3
1. Registration of candidates (This is done online) – School candidates are registered by Directors of Education (BECE) Heads of School (WASSCE) – Private candidates register individually.
2. Centre Arrangements for conduct of examinations
3. Submission of Continuous Assessment Scores (school examinations only)
STEP 4
1. Briefing Courses for Heads of school and Examination Officials
2. Sensitisation programme for schools/candidates
3. Packing of confidential materials
