2023 BECE update for Schools, Private and Resit Candidates
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has announced an important 2023 BECE update for learners who will be writing the BECE as Private candidates and Resit candidates. According to WAEC, the examination will be held from 7th August to 11th August 2023.
The examination will be conducted for Private, School, and Resit candidates. This means WAEC will conduct only one BECE in 2023 just as it did during the 2022 edition of the examination.
When will WAEC start 2023 BECE registration for School Private and Resit Candidates?
Per the update provided by WAEC, BECE school, and private registration starts from Monday, March 27, 2023, to Friday, April 28, 2023. Only eligible final-year Junior High School (JHS) students and those who sat the previous examination but need to pass some papers can register.
As part of efforts toward ensuring an error-free registration and examination period, WAEC has announced it will hold an information briefing session for all schools and other stakeholders who will be registering students for the 2023 BECE. The date for the briefing is Tuesday, 21st to Friday, 24th March 2023.

Schools in the various districts and circuits will be informed of where the meeting will be held in their respective districts ahead of the meeting.
To ensure the credibility of the examination is upheld, and examination malpractices are dealt with, WAEC has introduced new examination rules to meet the changing needs and sophisticated strategies of individuals, schools, and other stakeholders who attempt to cheat.
Revised Examination Rules
The Rules and Regulations for dealing with cases of irregularity in the Council’s examinations have been revised. The revision includes new rules on:
- Destruction of Exhibits
- Posting Live Questions on the Internet
- Refusal to grant timely access to the school premises
- Misconduct of examination officials
The revised rules are available on the Council’s website, and Heads of schools are urged to sensitise their candidates on them. The Council will also be embarking on wide sensitisation on these rules to create the needed awareness.
WAEC is expected to provide more information in the coming weeks for candidates who want to resit the examination and the procedures they will have to go through to register for the examination as private candidates.
