COMPREHENSION
(30 MARKS)
- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions which follow
Ghana, located on the west coast of Africa, is a country with a diverse economy that has experienced significant growth and development in recent years. The economy of Ghana is considered one of the fastest-growing in Africa, driven by various sectors such as agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and services.
Agriculture plays a vital role in Ghana’s economy, employing a significant portion of the population and contributing to the country’s food security. Ghana is a major exporter of agricultural products such as cocoa, timber, and oil palm. Cocoa is particularly important, as Ghana is the world’s second-largest producer of cocoa beans.
The mining sector is another significant contributor to Ghana’s economy. Gold, the country’s primary mineral resource, accounts for a substantial portion of its export earnings. Additionally, Ghana is rich in other minerals such as bauxite, manganese, and diamonds, which contribute to the mining industry’s growth.
Manufacturing is an emerging sector in Ghana’s economy, with the government implementing policies to promote industrialization and attract foreign investment. The manufacturing industry focuses on areas such as textiles, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and construction materials. These efforts aim to create jobs, reduce imports, and boost economic diversification.
The services sector has experienced remarkable growth and now contributes significantly to Ghana’s GDP. It includes sub-sectors such as finance, telecommunications, tourism, and transportation. The financial sector, in particular, has undergone significant reforms, leading to increased access to banking services and improved financial inclusion.
Ghana has also made progress in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) to support its economic growth. The government has implemented policies to improve the business environment, including tax incentives, infrastructure development, and streamlined regulations. FDI has flowed into various sectors, including oil and gas, telecommunications, and manufacturing, further stimulating economic expansion.
Despite these positive developments, Ghana still faces challenges in its economy. Inflation, fiscal deficits, and high unemployment rates remain areas of concern. The government continues to implement measures to address these issues, such as fiscal discipline, economic diversification, and investment in human capital through education and skills development.
