5 Habits Students Must Avoid To Pass Their Examinations

Every learner who truly wants to pass his or her exam must surely avoid one or more bad habits that retard their progress.

Passing the WASSCE or the BECE demands more than just preparation. It is an entire project that demands the highest level of commitment from teachers, parents, and students.

However, parents and teachers can at their best prepare students and provide them with the needed support. It takes extra work, seriousness, dedication, and discipline on the part of the student to break the back of failure and pass the BECE or the WASSCE.

To pass the WASSCE or BECE, the candidates must avoid all kinds of habits or behaviours, or activities that hinder their readiness and preparation.

Habits Students Must Avoid To Pass Their Examinations

Habit 1: Stop procrastinating learning activities

It will be extremely dangerous for BECE and WASSCE students or final-year students to keep postponing learning activities to another day. Time lost can never be regained. Students must do their best to achieve the best from every lesson, and time. What needs to be done as far as learning activities are concerned must be time now. If, for instance, you need to learn now but a friend has just visited you, and you are tempted to follow him or her out, just ask yourself if the benefits of learning do not outweigh the time to be spent out there.

Habit 2: Cramming

The common name for cramming is chew and pour. Very often, students keep procrastinating their learning until the last hour or a few days before the examination before they start being serious. Then they realize that they are far behind and cannot learn all the facts from the textbook or notes before the examination. At this denture, cramming does not really hip because understanding concepts ahead of the exam can help you explain them better than just trying to heap so much into memory over a short period. Students must stop this and become early birds. Do not join the chew and pour, pass and forget group of students.

Habit 3: Skipping Classes

When you attend classes, or you are present at nearly all lessons, you turn to keep up with the content or material or lesson the teacher is teaching. It helps you to learn along with the class and ask relevant questions. Failure to attend classes means you will fall behind and would need to do more to learn what has been taught by your friends or on your own. Skipping classes is a very bad habit that students preparing for their examinations must avoid.

Habit 4:  Not reviewing class notes

The big question that needs to be answered is why do many students gather lesson notes, or write them, and then keep adding to them without learning them as they come in bits and pieces. Many students fail to review their notes regularly. This is worrying because, sometimes, these students return to the class without any previous knowledge, although they were present. Teachers get demoralized by such a lazy approach to learning, and students need to help themselves. It is important that students rather learn the habit of going through their lesson notes from previous classes before reporting to the class. Some teachers devise a nice way of compelling students to learn before coming to class by organizing quizzes without any notice. This way, students have no choice but to revise their notes ahead of the next class and also be present.

Habit 5: Not practising past papers

Practising or learning to solve past questions is a very good habit for students who want to succeed in their examinations. Such an activity introduces the student to all forms of questions and how examiners expect students to approach them. The more you practice with the questions, the better you become and the more confident you get, especially if you are able to solve the questions. No one can doubt that as students practice with past questions, it helps them to get familiar with the types of questions that may appear in the exam. This also provides them with the opportunity to assess their preparation level ahead of the examination.

Students who want to excel in their examinations have several unhealthy habits to kick out and some of these: Not practising past papers, Procrastination, Not reviewing class notes, Skipping Classes and Cramming are a few of them.

Now, it is time to let go of the bad habits to increase your chances of passing your examination.
