The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a new reopening date for first-year SHS students’ and has provided further explanations for the new date.
GES gives new first-year SHS students’ reopening date and the reasons for the change
According to the managers of the education service, it has valid reasons for moving the reopening date for first-year Senior High School students from September 18, 2023, to September 25, 2023.
Speaking on the new development in an inteview with Daily Graphic newspaper, the GES indicated that the change is to prevent the situation where both tracks of double-track students for such schools end up in school at the same time which would lead to high numbers the schools can not contain.
“Because of the double track system, if the original date was made to stand, the schools might not be able to contain the number of students at a time.”
Again, due to the ongoing WASSCE, form threee students will be in school at the time schools were supposed to reopen. This was one of the factors that informed the change in reopning time so that the form three’s can complete their examination and exit school to create the needed space before the form one students report to school.
“The GES official added that even though the last paper of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would be written on September 26, “most of the final year students would have finished writing and left.”
“So, after consultation with the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, we agreed to shift the reopening date to September 25, 2023, to make room for the final year students to complete their examination,” the GES official disclosed.
“Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to inform all Heads of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools that the reopening date for Form One students has been rescheduled to September 25, 2023.

“Regional Directors of Education are requested to communicate this information to all Head of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools to inform parents and students to take note of the new date and prepare accordingly,” it said.
